The value pick for a dry Ballarat summer

Evaporative cooling in Ballarat.

Ballarat’s summers are hot but dry, which is exactly the climate where ducted evaporative cooling shines. Fresh, cool air through the whole home at a fraction of the running cost of refrigerated. We install, service and size it right.

Why evaporative suits the Central Highlands.

Evaporative cooling works by drawing hot, dry outside air through water-soaked pads. As the water evaporates it absorbs heat, and the air that comes out the other side is cooler and fresher. The drier the incoming air, the more cooling you get. Ballarat’s summers, hot and low in humidity at 435m elevation, are close to the textbook climate for it. On a dry 35 degree afternoon a well-sized unit keeps a Wendouree or Sebastopol home comfortable for a few cents an hour.

How it runs, and the one trade-off.

Unlike refrigerated cooling, you run an evaporative system with windows or a door slightly open so the cool air flushes through and pushes the hot air out. It is a fresh-air system, not a sealed-recirculation one. The single trade-off is the handful of humid days each summer, usually ahead of a northerly change, when the air is too moist for evaporation to cool much. If those days bother you, a refrigerated system is the answer, but for most Ballarat homes evaporative covers the great majority of the summer for far less money.

Sizing and outlet layout.

An evaporative cooler is sized by airflow rather than kW. Get the airflow and the outlet positions right and the home cools evenly; get them wrong and you end up with one freezing room and a warm back bedroom. We size the unit to the home’s volume, position the roof unit and outlets for even distribution, and make sure there is adequate relief air so the system can actually move the volume it is rated for.

2026 worked example, Wendouree.

A three-bedroom single-storey home in Wendouree, around 150m². We installed a quality inverter-fan ducted evaporative unit on the roof with eight ceiling outlets, a wall controller and a winterising kit to seal the roof penetration over the cold months. Installed: $6,200. The owner runs it most of the summer for a fraction of what the neighbour’s refrigerated system costs to run.

Annual service.

Evaporative coolers need a light pre-summer service. We clean or replace the cooling pads, check the water distribution and float valve, flush the bleed line and test the pump and fan. Ballarat’s hard water leaves mineral build-up on the pads, which is the most common reason an older cooler stops performing. A service is from around $160. See service and repair for the full range.
