Evaporative or refrigerated cooling for Ballarat?
Both systems suit Central Highlands summers, but they deliver a different kind of comfort and have very different installation costs. Here is the practical choice by house, budget and expectation.
Choose the experience you actually want.
Choose evaporative cooling when the house has an accessible roof, you like fresh moving air, you are comfortable leaving windows partly open, and keeping both the purchase price and running cost down matters most. It is an especially sensible fit for a single-storey brick veneer home in Wendouree, Sebastopol or Delacombe with a simple roof and 8 to 12 ceiling outlets.
Choose ducted refrigerated cooling when you want an exact indoor setpoint, need the house shut against smoke or pollen, want reliable performance on humid days, or want one reverse-cycle system to heat as well as cool. It is usually the stronger long-term choice for a well-sealed newer home in Alfredton or Delacombe, particularly with rooftop solar.
For a typical 3 to 4 bedroom home, evaporative cooling is about $5,500 to $9,500 installed. Ducted refrigerated cooling is about $14,000 to $26,000, or up to $32,000 for a large 2-storey system. Why evaporative cooling works here, until it does not.
Ballarat Aerodrome’s long-term mean maximum is about 25°C in January, but individual northerly days climb much higher. On those hot, dry days an evaporative unit can deliver air roughly 8°C to 12°C below the outdoor temperature. The breeze feels natural, doors can stay open, and the large air changes flush heat from the building rather than recirculating it.
The limitation arrives with a humid change. Evaporation cannot remove much more heat from air already carrying moisture, so the same unit that feels excellent during a dry 35°C afternoon can feel clammy when humidity rises. It also needs relief air. If every window is closed, pressure builds, airflow falls and comfort gets worse. A useful setup check is the tissue test: a tissue should be held gently against the flyscreen at an open window, not pinned hard and not falling away.
Refrigerated cooling recirculates and dehumidifies indoor air. It holds a chosen 23°C or 24°C setpoint far more reliably and works with the building closed. That matters on bushfire-smoke days, although ordinary return-air filters are not a complete smoke solution. Ask about the filter grade and whether the fan can handle its resistance.
What each system costs to operate.
An evaporative cooler mainly runs a fan and a small pump. At typical 2026 electricity and water tariffs, allow about $0.15 to $0.45 per hour, including roughly 15 to 40 litres of water an hour depending on unit size, bleed settings and conditions. Water quality matters because minerals concentrate as water evaporates. The drain and purge cycle must be set correctly, and pads generally need replacement every 3 to 7 years rather than simply being hosed forever.
A ducted refrigerated system uses a compressor, so a realistic whole-home allowance is $1.20 to $3.50 per hour. It will not draw maximum power continuously once the house reaches temperature, and zoning can cut demand substantially. Solar helps most when cooling demand coincides with afternoon generation. Compare quoted input power and seasonal efficiency, not only the big kW capacity number on the brochure.
Maintenance is also different. Budget $220 to $380 for an evaporative pre-summer service and $250 to $450 for a ducted refrigerated service, with repairs extra. Book in September or October. Waiting for the first 35°C forecast usually means longer lead times and fewer choices.
How to tell a complete quote from a cheap one.
For evaporative cooling, the quote should name the cooler model and rated airflow, list every outlet, show the water supply and drain route, include roof flashing, state the controller, and include safe roof access. Ask how the installer calculated relief-air openings and whether each branch will be balanced. An allowance with no duct sizes is not a design.
For refrigerated cooling, demand the indoor and outdoor model numbers, heating and cooling capacity at relevant outdoor conditions, zone and sensor layout, return-air size, duct insulation rating, condensate route, outdoor-unit position and switchboard allowance. A low outdoor unit beside a bedroom or hard against a boundary may create avoidable noise.
