How to choose a heating installer in Ballarat.
Licences, compliance certificates, carbon monoxide testing, cold-climate sizing and the red flags that cost Ballarat homeowners money and comfort. What to check before you sign, and the questions to ask every installer.
The licences a Ballarat installer must hold.
Heating and cooling work is regulated for good reason, gas and refrigerant handling are genuinely dangerous in the wrong hands. Before you let anyone touch your home:
- Gas work must be done by a licensed gasfitter, and a gas compliance certificate must be issued for the Type A appliance.
- Refrigerated or reverse-cycle cooling requires an ARCtick refrigerant handling licence.
- The electrical connection must be done by a licensed electrician to AS/NZS 3000.

Carbon monoxide testing, not optional in Ballarat.
This matters more in Ballarat than in many places because so much of the housing is older. Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and produced when a gas heater’s heat exchanger cracks or its flue corrodes or blocks. Make sure it’s sized for Ballarat, not Melbourne.
Ballarat sits at around 435m in the Central Highlands and is one of the coldest population centres in Victoria. A heater sized for a milder bayside climate is undersized here, it will run flat out and never quite get there on a 1 degree morning. Ask the installer how they sized the unit. When to walk away.
- No gas compliance certificate offered. Mandatory for a Type A gas appliance in Victoria. Its absence means the work is not legal.
- No ARCtick licence for refrigerant work. Illegal, uninsurable, and a sign of a cut-corner operator.
- A unit sized off floor area alone. Almost always undersized for a cold Ballarat winter.
- A standard, non-cold-climate reverse-cycle unit. It will struggle in July.
- No carbon monoxide test on an older heater. A safety shortcut you should never accept.
- Cash-only, no tax invoice, no written quote. No paper trail means no comeback if something goes wrong.
