Choose ducted gas when…
- Your home is on reticulated natural gas (most established Ballarat suburbs are).
- You want strong, fast whole-home warmth on the coldest mornings, gas furnaces recover temperature quickly after an overnight off period.
- You want the traditionally lowest running cost for whole-home heat on a long winter.
- You are happy to run a separate evaporative or refrigerated system for summer cooling.
Choose reverse cycle when…
- Your home is all-electric, or you want to drop the gas connection and its standing charge.
- You have, or plan to add, rooftop solar, which can power a big share of the heating and cooling.
- You want one ducted system that both heats in winter and cools in summer.
- You value precise temperature control and running cooling on humid northerly-change days.
Reverse cycle only works here if it’s cold-climate rated.
This is the single most important point on the page. A standard reverse-cycle unit loses heating capacity as the outdoor temperature falls, which is exactly the wrong behaviour for Ballarat, where the coldest mornings demand the most output. A middle path: keep gas, add cooling.
If you already have ducted gas you love, you do not have to rip it out for summer comfort.
