Why ducted gas is the Ballarat default.
Ballarat’s winters are no joke. At roughly 435 metres in the Central Highlands, the city routinely sits two to four degrees colder overnight than Melbourne, with frosts from May through September and snow flurries on Mount Buninyong most winters. For warming a whole home quickly on a 1 degree morning, ducted gas heating remains the workhorse here, and on natural gas it is usually the lowest running cost for whole-home heat.
A ducted gas system sits a single furnace (in the roof or under the floor) and pushes warm air through insulated ducts to ceiling or floor outlets in each room. One thermostat, even warmth, and it recovers temperature fast after the system has been off overnight, which matters far more in Ballarat than in a milder climate.
Star ratings and running cost.
Ducted gas units carry an energy star rating from around 3 stars up to 7 stars. In a cold-climate town like Ballarat the efficiency difference is paid back faster than it would be in Geelong or Melbourne, because the heater simply runs more hours per year. We generally recommend a minimum 5-star unit, and for a household that runs heating hard through a long Central Highlands winter the step up to a 6-star or 7-star furnace is usually worth the extra few hundred dollars up front.

The single most common mistake we see on quotes from out-of-town installers is a furnace sized for a milder climate. We run a proper room-by-room heat-load calculation that accounts for Ballarat’s elevation, the older weatherboard and solid-brick housing in Ballarat East and Soldiers Hill, ceiling height, glazing and insulation. An undersized unit runs flat out and never quite gets there on the coldest mornings; an oversized one short-cycles and wastes gas. We size it right.

We specified a 6-star 30 MJ/h ducted furnace in the roof, 12 ceiling outlets, a return-air grille, a 7-day programmable controller and two heating zones (living and bedrooms). Installed, certified and commissioned: $11,400. Adding a third zone and stepping to a 7-star unit would have added roughly $1,600.
Compliance and safety.
Ducted gas heating is a Type A gas appliance under Victorian regulations. Every install we do is carried out by a licensed gasfitter, comes with a gas compliance certificate, and is carbon monoxide tested on commissioning. CO testing matters: older open-flued heaters in Ballarat’s established housing stock are exactly the units the Victorian safety alerts have warned about, and a negative-pressure home with exhaust fans can pull flue gases back inside.
