Why some rooms stay cold with ducted heating.

One cold bedroom does not automatically mean a failing heater. Use the pattern of weak airflow, door pressure and temperature change to narrow the cause before paying for a replacement.

Start with the pattern

The number of cold rooms points to the fault.

One cold room usually means a local branch problem: a closed balancing damper, crushed flex duct, detached collar, failed zone damper or outlet that was never commissioned. If the room is at the far end of the house, a long undersized run becomes more likely. The heater itself is less likely because it is successfully warming every other room.

One whole zone is cold points to a motorised damper, controller assignment, zone sensor or common trunk serving those rooms. If the controller says the zone is open but no outlets respond, do not keep raising the thermostat. The fault sits between the controller and ductwork.

Every room is weak suggests a dirty return filter, restricted return path, fan fault, collapsed main duct or equipment problem. If airflow starts strong and fades after several minutes, a gas furnace may be reaching its high-temperature limit due to restriction. Book diagnosis rather than repeatedly resetting it.

Rooms warm with their doors open but cool when closed lack an adequate return-air path. Supply air must displace air already in the room. Without a door undercut, transfer grille or dedicated return, the room pressurises and delivery falls. This is common where carpet has been added after the original installation and reduced the door gap.

Safe checks

A 30-minute homeowner test.

  1. Clean the return-air filter. During heavy winter use, check a washable filter every 4 to 8 weeks.
  2. Open all zones and outlets. Set the fan to a normal heating cycle and leave internal doors open.
  3. After 10 minutes, compare airflow with a strip of tissue at each outlet. Do not rely only on hand temperature.
  4. Record the starting temperature in the cold room and a comfortable room, then repeat after 30 minutes.
  5. Close the cold room’s door. If it pushes itself open, whistles or strongly pulls tissue at the gap, note a likely return-path problem.
  6. Check the controller’s zone labels actually match the rooms that open and close.

You can clean a reachable filter, replace controller batteries, open registers and record symptoms. Do not enter a cramped roof cavity, remove furnace panels, bridge safety switches, adjust gas controls or cut into ducts. Roof plaster will not support body weight, electrical cables can be hidden under insulation, and gas work in Victoria is licensed work.

If there is gas odour, soot, a bang at ignition, unusual condensation or headaches that improve outside, stop using the heater. Ballarat causes

Why local houses develop uneven heating.

Ballarat’s long heating season exposes small duct losses. A split that wastes modest heat in May can leave a back bedroom unusable on a frosty July morning. Roof-cavity temperature, repeated thermal movement and disturbed insulation age flexible duct. Rodents can damage the outer insulation or inner liner, particularly in established homes around Wendouree, Sebastopol and Ballarat East.

Older weatherboard houses add high ceilings, leaky sash windows and limited wall insulation. A south-facing bedroom can have a much higher heat loss than the central hallway where the thermostat sits. Newer brick veneer homes have better envelopes, but large open-plan areas and west glazing can dominate the load. A floor-area-only equipment selection misses those room differences.

Underfloor ducts face different risks. Damp subfloors, damaged supports and tight access can let a duct lie on soil or pull from a boot. Ballarat’s reactive clay can move shallow structures and service penetrations over time, although soil movement is not proof of a duct fault. Repair budget

What fixing cold rooms should cost in 2026.

An airflow diagnosis and accessible roof inspection commonly costs $180 to $350. Reconnecting and correctly supporting one detached duct may bring the total to $250 to $650. Replacing several crushed or rodent-damaged branches generally costs $900 to $2,500, while a full 8 to 12 outlet re-duct is commonly $3,500 to $7,500.

Air balancing after repair may cost $300 to $800 depending on outlet count and access. A failed motorised damper commonly costs $450 to $950 supplied and fitted. Adding a proper bedroom return path can range from $350 for a simple transfer grille to more than $1,200 where fire, acoustic or structural details complicate the route.

Ask the technician to record filter condition, return-air pressure, supply temperature, duct defects, outlet readings and gas appliance safety results where applicable. Gas central heaters should be serviced at least every 2 years by a qualified gasfitter, following Energy Safe Victoria guidance. Service work should include carbon monoxide testing. Repair or redesign

When patching the duct is not enough.

Repair is sensible when equipment capacity is adequate, most ducts are sound and the fault is isolated. Redesign is better when multiple branches are undersized, old ducts have low insulation, zoning repeatedly starves airflow, or renovations changed the rooms without changing the system. Replacing a furnace will not correct a detached branch or missing return path.

A good redesign starts with room-by-room heat loads, then assigns outlet airflow, duct sizes and zones. It ends with commissioning under operating conditions. AS/NZS 5141 addresses residential heating and cooling installation requirements, and the AS 4254 series applies to ductwork performance. The homeowner does not need to calculate those standards, but should receive a scope that makes airflow and insulation visible.

Book investigation in February to April if possible. Roof spaces are safer to access than in peak summer, parts and appointment times are usually easier to secure, and the repair can be proven before winter.
